Building a Lasting Legacy

After graduating from Salem State with a master's degree in social work, Joe Wamness '00G knew it was important to give back. "I found my place and purpose in life here at Salem State," Joe exclaims.
Joe immediately immersed himself in alumni activities upon graduation, collaborating with the School of Social Work to establish and recruit volunteers for the Friends of Social Work affinity group. He became an active member of the alumni association and foundation where he and his husband, William "Bill" Clay settled in as steadfast supporters of the university's mission. Both have had a continuous presence at university events-from the Salem State Series, Alumni Weekend, the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Naples, and innumerable alumni engagement events. In 2013, Joe also took on a leadership role on the 10,000 Reasons campaign steering committee, helping the university reach its $25 million fundraising goal.
Joe and Bill's relationship with Salem State has deepened as they became pillars of support and dedication for over two decades. As consecutive donors for the past 23 years, their commitment is further evident in their philanthropic support of the university, most recently through a bequest directed toward Viking Completion Grants.
The couple shares, "We chose completion grants because we want to help
students cross the finish line at graduation. It's so important to invest
in student success, particularly because Salem State students work so hard
to turn their dreams into reality. They deserve our advocacy and support."
